Even though I read We Were Liars by E. Lockhart a few years ago, it recently became viral again because of the screen adaptation. So, here I am, remembering all the things I loved about it (and ignoring the fact that it completely destroyed me).

What makes We Were Liars so special?

I majored in languages and read hundreds of books, but this one will always be one of my favorites. Yes, lots of people had negative comments about it, but that’s just how the world functions. So, don’t be afraid to say you like something that other people might not find interesting.

Anyways, let’s get back to what makes We Were Liars so special. It’s definitely one of those books that keeps you guessing all the time. At the very beginning, readers find out that something mysterious happened to Cadence last summer while she was enjoying summer vacation with her cousins on their private island. None of them reached out to her in the past year, and she’s back to get the answers. This book is a perfect example of a YA psychological thriller written in a contemporary style. Kudos to E. Lockhart.

It’s told in a fragmented, lyrical, and poetic style, often compared to stream-of-consciousness. This makes you feel connected to the characters, and you become deeply invested in the story. We Were Liars builds slowly toward a shocking twist you won’t see coming – and once you do, it will reframe the entire story. Don’t be surprised if you shed a tear, I’ve warned you at the very beginning – it broke my heart too.
